2006 Downloads Revisited

We get a lot of e-mail around here at WorldStart all with varying subjects. Some that ask for tech help and even some that are just looking for an old tip or download that we featured in a newsletter at an earlier time. The e-mails are of course routed off to their appropriate destinations where we, the WorldStart employees, receive them and attempt to reply with the best possible answers. Personally, I noticed a pattern of e-mails from the Computer Tips newsletter readers looking for links to downloads we’ve run in the past, with most of them from the past six months or so.

So, with that knowledge and a suggestion from a co-worker, I decided to run a roundup of what have been the most popular free downloads so far this year. I think this is something that anyone who enjoys the Downloads of the Week will appreciate and to patrons that maybe missed an article the first time around will have a second chance to get a great free program.

So, with no further adieu, I present to you (in my opinion) the best downloads of the year so far from WorldStart.

1. My WiFi Zone: This is a must have program for anyone running a wireless network, especially if you live in a highly populated area. This little guy is like a watchdog for your wireless connection and it can help you determine things like if someone is trying to piggyback your wireless connection. You can easily see who’s on your network, who has been on your network before and who has been attempting to get on. It’s easy to use and a great way for any novice to the world of wireless networks to get their feet wet in regards to wireless security. Read more about it here.

2. Process Link Library: This, in my opinion, is one of the best free programs on the Web period. With this program, you can easily decipher the cryptic nature of determining what processes in your task manager are responsible for. This can become an invaluable tool to anyone troubleshooting sluggish systems or application conflicts. Find it here.

3. Disk View: This program should be sitting right next to Process Link Library in your utilities folder on your PC. (I know you all have one!) The reason you should have this program is simple; it will quickly and easily show you what sections of your hard drive are being occupied by what programs, services, data, etc. In short, it will show you what occupies every bit of space on your system’s hard drive graphically. This will unravel the mystery of your hard drive and give you a better understanding of how things are set up. Learn more about it here.

4. AM Notebook: I honestly use this program all the time. It’s like a scratch pad for your desktop. The program allows you to quickly take notes, make tables, organize data and a lot more. The program is small and out of the way, yet it does not lack in the feature department. So, forget about firing up that big clunky MS Word and just jot down some notes instead. Don’t even think about using Windows Notepad or as you might refer to it, the lackluster wonderdud. With AM Notepad, you may not even need sticky notes anymore! Read more about it here.

5. GodFather: And last, but definitely not least, the GodFather. This is an audio management program and it’s about as robust as you’re going to find. So, if you are like me and have thousands of audio files on your PC, this is a must have. With the GodFather managing your audio files, you will have complete control with unbelievable flexibility of every audio file on your system. With GodFather, you will be a made man/woman and rule over all your audio files with an iron fist. Just try to remember the little people on your way to the top! Find it here.

Well, I hope you enjoyed the recap. I have some more great things lined up for you in the next couple of weeks, so make sure you stay tuned and check it out. And as always, it has been my pleasure. Now, go on and have yourself a great day!
