3 Companies ‘Driving’ the Future of Car Technology

Thursday, July 28th, 2016 by | Filed Under: Hardware & Peripherals

We are living in one of the most exciting times for vehicle development. The design and manufacture of today’s vehicles are more complex than ever before. Today’s vehicles are also, in many cases, safer and more energy-efficient. This surge of new technology is driving us into the future with self-driving cars, electric vehicles and new technology that we have never seen. Read on to find out how three, leading companies are changing the way we drive and travel.

The tech giant’s self-driving car project has been the topic of discussion for the past few years. These new prototypes are designed to help people get around easier and more safely than traditional vehicles with just the push of a button; there’s absolutely no driving required. Google cites 1.2 million annual deaths around the globe are caused by traffic accidents, many of which are the result of human error.

At Google, the company hopes to dramatically lessen that statistic with its self-driving car. These smart cars are built with software containing sensors designed to detect objects on the roadway, including pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles as far away as two football fields. Today, Google’s self-driving fleet has traveled more than 1.5 million miles and is currently testing in cities across America to perfect its technology. While these vehicles are not yet available, we can only expect to hear more about the project in the years to come. Maybe, decades from now, self-driving cars will be the new standard.

In order to see what the future holds, sometimes we have to revisit the past. In 1900, Harvey S. Firestone forever changed the way people got around, as he was a revolutionary in the start of the automobile. Firestone’s new innovation didn’t just impact the automotive sector; his work directly impacted other industries, including rail-driven vehicles, tractors, and even airplanes. Firestone’s legacy continues to live on today on racetracks across the country and in everyday life. The storied company is still at the forefront of innovation and is continuously working on new technology to drive us into the future.

Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors has soared in popularity over recent years for its premium electric vehicles, including the Model S and Model X. With just a 30-minute charge, a Tesla vehicle can travel up to 170 miles. And, across the United States, Tesla Motors has provided 671 Supercharger stations for drivers to use. In addition to being the most attractive electric car on the market today, Tesla also offers some of the safest vehicles, too.

The Model S is designed to be one of the safest sedans on the road, with features like adaptive lighting; autopilot, which includes auto-steer; lane change; and auto-park, as well as its low center of gravity that protects the driver. And in the event of an accident, the Model S protects its passengers with its eight airbags strategically placed throughout the car’s cabin. Musk also heads up Space X, a space program where employees are working to develop technology so people can one day live on other planets. Which begs the question: Will people be driving Tesla vehicles in space one day? Only the future will tell.

Would you be willing to try out a self-driving car? Let us know in the comments.

    Hey Jiro,
Nice Tip, as to ‘…sensors designed to detect objects on the roadway’ must include ‘potholes’ and ‘sinkholes’ before I think I would sign on to a ‘self-driving’ car.
