I’m sure a lot of you will some great tech gifts in your stocking this year. But I’ve got a few tips that can make sure you get to enjoy your groovy gadget.
1. Save the packaging! For items like tablets and phones, it’s imperative that you keep the original packaging. Many places will not allow you to return the item without it. Also, if you do need to ship the item back for a return or a replacement, the original packaging usually has inserts designed to keep the item safe and secure.
2. Open it and try it out! Don’t put it away thinking you’ll give it a try later. When you finally plug it in a few months, it may not start up. At that point, you may be too late to return the item. If you want to a replacement device, there may not be any more in stock. Or worse, you might stash it away somewhere and not find it again for months or even years. If there’s a warranty card, make sure to fill it out or register the item online.
3. Learn how it works! If there is a manual included, look over it. Or go to the manufacturer’s website and look for downloads and step-by-step instructions for getting started. You can also find help from sites like Worldstart. YouTube is a great place to look for instructional videos made by people like you. Or ask a tech-savvy friend to set aside some time to show you how it works.
