How do you repair the “502 Bad Gateway” error?

There is some good news and bad news when it comes to 502 Gateway errors. The good news is it’s probably not your computer’s fault. The bad news is there isn’t much you can do to fix it if it isn’t your computers fault. 502 errors are generally errors between servers trying to transfer information needed to load the webpage your requesting.

If this error is on a website, it is most likely a site error and the server administrator of that website needs to investigate and repair it. The most you can do is report the specific website address to the company who runs the website so they are aware of the issue.

There are a few situations where a 502 error can be a problem specific to your machine. If you contact the website and they insist everything is working fine then you can try these steps to correct the problem on your end.

  1. Reload the webpage by going to View > Refresh or pressing F5. Refreshing the site will request the website again and may resolve the problem.
  2. Close and reopen your web browser. There might be a corruption or bug that has affected your web browsing session and will resolve itself by reopening the browser.
  3. Reboot your computer and/or router. A temporary network issue can causd errors, especially if it’s on multiple different websites. You may also want to restart your routerĀ or cable modem by unplugging the device, waiting a minute, then plugging it back in. It can take a few minutes for a router or cable modem to reset once you’ve plugged it back in.
  4. Clear cache and temporary files from your web browser. The procedure varies by browser but can usually be found under the tools or settings menu.
  5. Contact your internet service provider if all else fails, as it may be a network-wide issue. Do not do this if other websites are working, as they are almost guaranteed to tell you it’s a problem with the specific site your trying to access
