A Camera Powered By Android?

Nikon recently announced the Nikon Coolpix S800C, which features something really unique: Google’s Android operating system.

Android’s functionality built into the camera lets you connect to WiFi hotspots in your house or out and about anywhere WiFi is available. While it will be running an older version of Android (2.3), it will still include the full suite of Google applications. The biggest benefit of Android will be to upload pictures and video directly from the camera, and not only that, but you can also use the thousands of Android applications to browse the web, check e-mail, edit pictures and so much more.

So what does this Nikon powerhouse include?

  • 16 megapixel sensor
  • 10x Vibration Reduction Optical Zoom (25mm to 250mm)
  • 3.5″ OLED touch screen
  • 2 GB storage for Android OS + SDXC Card slot for picture storage
  • Burst mode up to 8 frames per second
  • 1080p video recording
  • Built-In GPS
  • HDMI and USB 3.0 Output
  • Rechargeable Battery with estimated ~140 shots/charge.
  • Available in White and Black

So is this the future of digital imaging? I am excited to see the possibilities of integrating the powerful Android operating system and apps into a camera, but we will have to wait until we can play with one to have a final say. The S800C is set to go on sale in September at a MSRP of $350.
