A Real Player Vulnerability

A Real Player Vulnerability

Hello, everyone!

Today, I have a heads up for you about a recent security vulnerability that was detected in all versions of the Real Player media program. If you have Real Player on your computer, you should definitely read this and follow the directions immediately!

On October 19, 2007, the Symantec corporation (the creators of the Norton antivirus program) discovered a security hole in the Real Player software. The vulnerability they found allows certain malicious Web sites to gain access to a computer and remotely execute files. That makes your computer completely open to several attacks and it also opens your computer to spread viruses to other PCs. Wow!

The good news is though that Real Player has responded quickly to the problem. As of yesterday (October 23, 2007), they have fixed the issue. All you have to do is make sure you have the latest version of Real Player on your computer and download the patch.

If you have Real Player version 2 or 10, you need to upgrade to 10.5 or 11 beta. To get the latest version of Real Player, you can go to http://www.real.com [1].

Once you have that done, or if you already have 10.5 or 11 beta, all you need to do is download the patch, which is available by simply clicking this link.

For more detailed information on this security issue, you can visit Symantec’s security bulletin right here. Until next week, stay safe out there!
