Alert! New MS Phone Scam

A reader wrote with an alert about a new twist on an old phone scam:  “I am writing because of a phone scam. I received a call, taken by my answering machine, that stated that my Windows license key had expired, all my Windows functions had been stopped on my computer, and it was an emergency to call an 800 number to reinstate. First, as you know, the license key doesn’t expire, and second, I pay money to Microsoft for other things such as Office 365. That’s not how they handle billing.”

Thanks for letting us now. I don’t really have much more to add to that. You’re right. License keys don’t expire on home systems. Microsoft doesn’t call you at home. They’re just hoping to hit someone who might be having a bit of computer trouble and work them into a panic.

Folks still fall for these scams every single day. Remember, Microsoft will NEVER call you at home out of the blue. The only time you’ll get a call from Microsoft is if you go to their tech support site and request to have someone call you.  Any other time, it’s a scam.

    I had a few myself

Received similar call claiming “all my Windows functions had been stopped on my computer”. Knew it was Scam but had some time to waste their time so asked them why Office was still fully operational on a machine running MS OS, then kept them on phone while I ‘presumably’ shut down and restarted computer. Of course for their benefit it ‘presumably’ took 10 minutes to Stop and Start.
IF MS had stopped or resulted in error message I would have been concerned but never comply with an unsolicited call from someone I don’t know.

I received a call stating that something was wrong with my computer and was asked if I could go to my computer………..I hung up.
