Alanna S. Asks:
I tend to save a lot of websites to my Favorites folder. I looked today and there are tons that are out of date. How can I get rid of my old Favorites without having to go through every single one?
Hi, Alanna! I, too, save lots of websites (too many!) in my Favorites folder (they are technically called bookmarks).
The only way to do it within your Windows operating system is outlined here.
The way I do it is by using a program called AM-DeadLink (v.4.4). It is seriously the best program out there for removing all of your dead links and any that you have put in twice (or three times … or four times …).This is from the Publisher:
AM-DeadLink detects dead links and duplicates in your Browser Bookmarks. If a Bookmark has become unavailable you can verify it in the internal preview and delete it from your Browser. Additionally you can download FavIcons for all your Favorites and Bookmarks. AM-Deadlink works with Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla and Firefox.
Let me tell you a little bit about it.
When you first open the program, this is what is displayed:
I have highlighted each field coordinated it with the number on the left explaining what the field is. For instance, if you look at what’s highlighted in green, look to your left and you will see that this is the menu bar (#1). If you look at what’s highlighted in yellow, you will see a box with Opera in it. Look to your left and #2 explains that this is the drop down box for all browsers currently on your system.
This program is so easy to use. To get started, up on the menu bar you see Bookmarks. Click on that, and you get a drop-down menu. One of the options in the drop-down menu is Check bookmarks. Click on that and all of your bookmarks will load, giving you the name, the name of the website/page, and what status the bookmark is in, i.e. the website is OK, the website is not found, etc. (Note: When clicked on, the highlighted bookmark’s actual page is in the bottom window .)
If you look at the drop-down menu in further detail, you see that you can just look for duplicates (Find Duplicates) or even sort the bookmarks so that all the ones with errors come first (Sort Bookmarks with errors to the top of the list). Explore the menu bar for other options.
Once again, the program is called AM-Deadlink (v. 4.4). I swear by this program. It’s easy (always important) and really works (very important). I usually use this program and then back up my Favorites; that way I don’t have so many dead links.
Try this program, Alanna! It’s a handy program for people that want to clean up their Favorites from time to time. For people like you and I, it’s not only handy, it’s a necessity!
Thanks for writing!
