I’ve been an avid rock collector since I was a little girl, so I was really excited when I found this Web site all about minerals. Here you can not only learn more about minerals, but you can see pictures of them as well. Navigation is found on the left frame and the sections are:
By Name – This is my favorite way of looking at the minerals. Here you can choose from an alphabetical listing. For example, choose A, then choose Acanthite. The mineral will load and you will see an image of it, you can read all about it and you can learn about its physical properties.
By Class – Minerals are categorized by what they are made of. Here you can choose by class. Remember that Acanthite I chose for an example? Well, that is a sulfide. So, to find more like it, you would choose the Sulfides class. There you can learn all about what sulfides are and what minerals fall into that category.
Interesting Groupings – This is another interesting way to navigate the site. It breaks it down into interesting groupings, such as: Gemstones, Birthstones, Biblestones (minerals referenced in the Bible) and Fluorescent Minerals, just to name a few.
Physical Properties – This lets you explore the minerals by their physical properties. Some physical properties are: luster, color, twinning, streak, odor, fluorescence, feel and even taste. To see the full listing of physical properties, start your exploration here.
This is a really interesting site and I hope you learn as much about the properties of minerals as I did. It was really fun to learn all about my birthstone, as well as, those of my family members. Now, I’m off to explore more minerals. Enjoy!
