Android 101: Connect To The Internet: Part 2

Tuesday, March 29th, 2016 by | Filed Under: Android, Using The Internet

The very first thing you need to do when you get a  tablet is to connect it to the Internet. After all, a tablet is basically an Internet appliance. Yesterday, in part 1 of this article, we talked about the basics you need to have in place before connecting your tablet. If you’re not sure if you have WiFi, you’ll want to click here for more information.

To set up WiFi, you’ll need to find Settings on your Android device. It is usually represented by a little gear icon.

Once you’re in Settings, look for WiFi.  Where that is is going to depend on your Android device and which version of Android you’re using.

When you tap WiFi, you’ll be able to see a list of available connections.

You may see multiple connections. Your device could detect your neighbor’s WiFi as well as yours. You’ll want to tap your WiFi. If you aren’t sure which one that is, you might check your PC to see what it’s connected to. Generally, the strongest signal is your network. Of course, your password won’t work on your neighbor’s network. Once you tap your network a box asking for a password will pop up.

Make sure you type that password correctly. This is once case where capitalization and spelling count.  It should say authenticating for a second or so, then read connected.  If it stays stuck on authenticating for more than a few seconds, or you get an authentication error, you are probably typing the password in wrong. Try again. If there’s an option to show the password, you should choose that.

When connected, it should look like this:

If you’re using an Android phone, think about checking the box shown below. Then you’ll be notified whenever a WiFi network is available for your phone. Once it connects to a network, your phone will remember that network and connect automatically. That way you won’t use any of your phone’s data plan for games or streaming when you’re at home.

Then make sure to go to the Google Play Store and tap the menu icon.

Tap Settings.

Under Auto-update apps, select Auto-update apps over Wi-Fi only.

Then apps will only update when you’re connected to WiFi.
