Android 101 – Connect To The Internet

Monday, March 28th, 2016 by | Filed Under: Android, Using The Internet

I’ve had a few question lately about how you connect an Android device to Internet. As many of you point out, most devices don’t really come with instructions. They assume you’re already familiar with the process. But if you’re a beginner, it can be pretty confusing.

Every Android device is just a little different. But these basic instructions should help you find your way around well enough to log on.

First of all, WiFi is a must for most tablets. There are some tablets that allow you connect to 3G or 4G with a data plan from a phone carrier, but for the most part, a tablet really is designed to be a WiFi appliance.

You’ll need a high-speed Internet connection and a router that broadcasts a WiFi signal. If you’re already using a laptop with a wireless connection, you are almost certain to have WiFi in your home. You should be able to log onto that network with your tablet and also with your Android phone.

If you currently just have a wired Internet connection, you’ll need to get a router. If your Internet Service Provider provided the modem with the service, there’s a chance it already is a router. Check with them to find out. If not, you’ll need to purchase and set up a router in order to have a WiFi signal in your home.

A WiFi signal isn’t just for your tablet or your PC. It’s also a good idea to have your Android phone connected to WiFi whenever you’re home. Why eat up your phone data plan with games, Internet surfing or streaming, when you can use your home WiFi connection?

So before we get started, make sure you have a home WiFi signal available and also that you have the password for your WiFi handy. If you aren’t sure where it’s at, you’ll need to find it before we get going.

Tomorrow, in part 2 of this article, I’ll walk you through the process of setting up WiFi.
