Android, the popular phone, tablet and electronics operating system by Google, is now the number one portable electronics operating system. At WorldStart, we always keep our readers updated on the latest and most popular tech, so we’ll be doing a multi-week series on how to use Android. If you don’t own an Android device yet, it’s still worth reading. Google gives away the source code to Android. That means it’s showing up on more devices every day.

Part 2: Android’s  Settings Screen

The settings screen is the one-stop shop for settings for your tablet. From this menu you can do a whole host of tasks, from setting up Wi-Fi to uninstalling apps.  Lets go through the most-used setting and learn how to make them work for you.

Configuring Wi-Fi & Bluetooth

To configure Wi-Fi, start by tapping Settings. Scroll on the left hand side and tap Wi-Fi. If the slide On/Off switch shows Off, slide the switch to the On position. Click on the name of your wireless network, you’ll find it on the right-hand side. Type in your passcode and press Connect.

To configure Bluetooth, start by tapping Settings. Scroll on the left hand side and tap Bluetooth. If the slide On/Off switch shows Off, slide the switch to the On position. Devices which are in pairing mode will display on the right hand side. Tap the name of the device to pair and type in the passcode (the passcode for most devices is 0000) and press Connect.

Set Screen Brightness & Wallpaper

For screen brightness start by tapping Settings. Scroll on the left hand side and tap Display. Tap Brightness and slide the slider until you’ve reached the desired brightness and tap OK.

For wallpaper, start by tapping Settings. Scroll on the left hand side and tap Display. Tap wallpaper and tap either Gallery (your pictures) Live Wallpapers (moving wallpapers in background) or Wallpapers (built-in wallpaper images). Tap the wallpaper you want and tap Set Wallpaper.

Uninstalling App / Moving App to a memory card.

To uninstall an app start by tapping Settings. Scroll on the left hand side and tap Apps. Tap on the App you wish to uninstall and tap Uninstall. Tap OK to confirm the uninstall.

To move an app to a memory card start by tapping Settings. Scroll on the left-hand side and tap Apps. Tap on the App you want to move and tap Move to SD card. Once the move is complete, the button which previously said Move to SD will say Move to Tablet. You can tap Move to Tablet to move an app back to the devices main memory.

Screen Lock & Owner Information

To set up a screen lock start by tapping Settings. Scroll on the left-hand side and tap Security. Tap Screen Lock and tap one of the choices on right-hand side and enter in the desired password or pattern. Available options are:

  • Slide: Simple slide lock, no security.
  • Face Unlock: Recognizes your face, low to medium security.
  • Pattern: Draw a pattern between 9 points, medium to high security depending on complexity.
  • Pin: Number based pin code, low to high security depending on length.
  • Password: Alpha numeric password, low to extremely high security depending on complexity.

To set the owner information start by tapping Settings. Scroll on the left-hand side and tap Security. Tap Owner Info and tap in the empty box to enter in Owner Information. Tap Show Owner Info on lock screen if you want to display the information on your lock screen.

-Tim

P.S. There are TONS more options in the settings screen. Explore a bit but just remember to write down what you change just in case the change has a side-effect you didn’t want. Then you can go back and reverse the setting. The only area this won’t work on is the App Uninstall or Back & reset section. If you reset the device, you cannot recover any lost information.
