OK, maybe you don’t want to use Outlook Express but would rather check your AOL email using Thunderbird or Netscape 7.2—well, here you go…

In Thunderbird go o to Tools/Account Settings then click the “Add Account” button.

Make sure the “Email Account” radio button is selected. Click “Next”.

Enter your screen name and your email address (screen name plus @aol.com). Click “Next”.

Select the IMAP radio button

Type “imap.aol.com” (without the quotes) in the “Incoming Server” box.

Type “smtp.aol.com” (without the quotes) in the “Outgoing mail (SMTP) server…” box. Click “Next”.

Under “User Names” type in your AOL screen name.

In the “Account Name” box put in what you want that account displayed as (“My AOL” for instance).

Check over your settings then click “Finish”.

Now, here’s the tricky part, especially if you have more than one email account. Let’s set up your outgoing connection (SMTP).

Go to Tools/Account Settings and select “Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)” from the list.

Click the “Advanced” tab to bring up the Advanced Outgoing Server window. Select “Add” then under “Server name” enter “smtp.aol.com” (without the quotes) , “587″ as the port, put in your User Name and click OK.

Now, go back to Account Setiings for the AOL account and select “Server Settings”. Click the Advanced button. Under the SMTP tab select the AOL server you just created.

When you check your AOL mail it will ask for your password. If you want it to always remember the password, check the box “Use Password Manager…”

Netscape 7.2 is the easiest of all. Go to Edit/Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings and click the “Add Account” button.

Under “New Account Setup” you’ll see a radio button for AOL. After selecting the button and clicking Next, all you do is put in your name and AOL screen name. Click Next then Finish.

When you check your AOL mail it will ask for your password. If you want it to always remember the password, check the box “Use Password Manager…”

Since the mail stays on the server you will need to visit your AOL mail center to empty it out now and then.

Now you have all the benefits of Thunderbird or Netscape with your AOL Mail.
