It's Popular, That's For Sure!

Our Software Bargain Bin is getting more traffic than ever! We put stuff in there and it sells out fast - sometimes we've only had an item in for a few hours and we're out of stock! We never expected it to be this successful. It probably has something to do with the fact that everything in the Bargain Bin is $3.97-$7-97 with Free US Shipping.

Well, since this thing is so popular, we've spent a good part of the weekend updating and adding new items. Many titles are gone, but we've added lots of new stuff too. So, even if you've shopped in the Bargain Bin before, make sure you stop by again soon! (like, real soon!)

With Christmas Eve only 3 weeks from today, now's the time to stock up. There's tons of titles that would be perfect gifts. Find out for yourself why this thing is so popular -

Computers 101

Q:
I'm sick of my slow 56K modem. What's better, cable or DSL for a fast connection?

A:
First, for those who are new to computing, let me define what these are.

Cable Connection - You have a "modem" that your regular cable line plugs into (you know, the one that normally goes to your TV). Most are a constant internet connection, a few (if you have analog cable as opposed to digital) use your phone line for uploads and the cable for download. They are still fast, but not quite as good a regular cable connection.

DSL Connection - DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line (some who have had difficulties may have another word for the "D" :-).

Anyhow, DSL uses your existing phone lines for connection, but at very high speeds. It is another "always on" type internet connection and in a few years may be the # 1 high speed type connection (cable is now).

Keep in mind that cable is generally a little faster then "standard" DSL. However, there are newer DSL technologies that are as fast, or even faster, than a T1 line ( a T1 line is really quick, you can easily host a busy web site, or multiple busy sites for that matter, with a T1 line). So if you go for one of these higher speed DSL connections, you'll blow away a cable modem.

In the end, either one will be a vast improvement over your 56K modem. You'll probably be going 50 - 100 times faster than what you currently are. To me, the most important consideration would be which is more affordable in your area.

Tip of the Day

Document Scraps

Web Link - http://www.worldstart.com/tips/docscrap.htm

Here's a cool one. With this tip, you can stick a "scrap" of information on your Desktop. You can then take this "document scrap" and paste it into another application - without opening it up (although it doesn't work on everything).

First, you'll need to use a program that supports OLE2 drag and drop. Programs like Word, MS Paint, Wordpad, Corel WordPerfect, and most other popular programs will support this function.

OK, now, here's how to do it.

Just highlight the text you would like to copy. Drag it to your desktop (don't copy it, just highlight and drag). A "Document scrap" will be created on the desktop for you.

You can make as many of these little "scraps" as you like. They can be text or images.

Here's a picture of one:

Oh, and you may want to right-click them and re-name them too - makes it easier to figure out which one is which.

To use these document scraps, either double-click them to open, or drag them to where you would like to have them inserted into your document (again, this only works with some programs).

A really cool use for this is if you use the same text over and over. For example, maybe you have some information you occasionally e-mail to people and find it annoying to be constantly opening up your word processor and all the associated copying / pasting.

Well, if you right-click the document scrap, and select "Copy" from the resulting menu, the info in that scrap is placed on the clipboard where you can paste into your e-mail message (again, not every program supports this). I use this little trick all the time to send out info to commonly asked questions.

Cool Site of the Day

September 11th, World Trade Center

We all know what happened on September 11th. Since that time, there have been lots of pictures, images, and poems - and we've found a site with all of this is in one place. Take a look:

Oh, and we're looking for non-commercial sites. We generally don't run sites that are strictly for shopping.
