New Viruses

Once again those annoying little virus people are trying to making life miserable.

There is a new one out called the "Myparty" virus. It's not overly nasty, its main mission is to send itself to everyone in your address book.

It comes like this:

Subject:
new photos from my party!

Message:
Hello!

My party... It was absolutely amazing!
I have attached my web page with new photos!
If you can please make color prints of my photos. Thanks!

Attachment:
www.myparty.yahoo.com

People are getting fooled by the ".com" in the attachment. They think it's a website, but it's actually a type of executable (program) file.

There have already been two versions of this one. The first only worked between Jan 20-24, the current one is from Jan 25 - 29 (today). I'm hoping that this is the last we'll see of this one, but since there have already been two, I wouldn't be surprised to see a third one pop up soon.

Even if another one doesn't pop up, it's a good idea to keep an eye out for copy cats. It's actually a very clever way to trick people into opening a virus.

The good news is we've seen dozens of these come in already and our Norton Anti-virus has stopped them all. In fact, it was stopping them before we even know this one was out there (due to its automatic update feature).

Don't have Norton Anti-Virus? We still have the 2002 boxed version on sale. It's only $39.97 and includes a $20.00 mail-in upgrade rebate.

I'm always telling you how much I like this product (and System Works), but today I'm going to share what a couple of our readers have said:

Hi Steve
I just wanted to tell you that I have the Norton System works that I ordered from you a few months back. I just got two emails with the new virus (badtrans etc) and my Norton caught both of them saving me a big headache. Just wanted you to know I LOVE my Norton AntiVirus!!!!!
~ Patte

Steve: I've had Norton Anti Virus 2001 protection for over a year now. I have had two emails come to me in the past two weeks that had viruses and my Norton AV took care of it immediately. The first time the NAV screen came on my screen I didn't know what it was but as I read I realized that there was an email with a virus. I followed instructions and when the next virus came I knew without a doubt I had an email with a virus. I am thankful for Norton as it daily scans my computer, etc and takes care of any virus before it gets to me. Just wanted you to know that I am SOLD on NAV.
~ Elaine

Computers 101

Q:
What's the Taskbar?

A:
See your Start button? It, along with any running programs, sit on your taskbar. It's there so you can quickly see what programs you have running. If you have Internet Explorer 4.0 or better installed, it can also have icons, address bars, and other cool stuff on it.

Tip of the Day

Adding Shortcuts to the Taskbar (and making them bigger)

Web Link - http://www.worldstart.com/tips/taskbarshortcuts.htm

I know, this is kind of a basic tip for you long time Windows users, but we've been getting a lot of questions on this lately. So, if you want to add icons to your taskbar - or make the ones you already have on it bigger, read on!

OK, first we'll talk about getting the icons there in the first place. By default, win 95/98/ME/2000 users using Explorer 4.0 or better should see at least a few icons on their taskbar. The part of the taskbar where these icons sit is known as the "Quick Launch Toolbar".

To add more icons to it, just drag them from the desktop or your Start button, Programs area.

I recommend a right-click drag and drop instead of the normal procedure if you're dragging from the Programs menu area. If you drag with your left mouse button, you'll move the icon from the Programs menu to the Quick Launch Toolbar. It won't be available from the Start button, Programs area anymore. If you right-click and drag, you'll get a menu with an option to "Copy here". Select that and you'll keep the original icon under the programs menu plus have it on the Quick Launch Toolbar.

XP Users:

XP, by default, has the Quick Launch Toolbar shut off. I don't know why they felt the need to do this, but they did. Anyhow, in order to use and drag stuff to it under XP, you'll need to do the following:

1. Right-click the Taskbar and select Properties from the resulting menu.

2. A Taskbar and Start Menu Properties screen will materialize. Make sure you're on the Taskbar tab.

3. Uncheck the "Lock the taskbar" checkbox and check the "Show Quick Launch" checkbox.

OK, that should take care of putting your favorite programs on the Quick Launch Toolbar.

Now, by default the icons are tiny. Too small if you ask me. To make them bigger, just right-click a blank area on the Quick Launch part of the Taskbar and select View, Large Icons. That'll turn your baby icons into grownups.

Wildlife Gardening

Ah…it's almost February, it's time to start planning your garden.

Would you like to attract birds or butterflies to your garden? Or would you like to turn your garden into a wildlife habitat? Just think of the countless hours you can spend watching squirrels, chipmunks and other animals romp through your garden.

Maybe you'd like a natural bug zapper? So that means you need a garden that attracts bats. That's right they're natural bug zappers, and much safer than those annoying electric zappers. Well, if you're curious and love wildlife, here's the site for you. It has tons of articles on how to do all of the above and much more.
