Q:
I want to save some money by buying ink refills. What do you think?

A:
I get asked this a lot, so here's my opinion.

Well, in general I recommend not using refills. They are probably OK for printers with ink nozzles that are NOT built into the cartridge (like Canon printers), but I would still be careful. The ink may not be the same quality as what you would get from the manufacturer.

If you are using an HP printer, the ink nozzle is built into the printer cartridge and is not meant to be run for refill after refill. When you replace your ink cartridge, you also replace your old nozzle with a brand new one. Helps keep the print quality good (especially important if you're trying to print out photographs).

Another point to consider is that when you bought your printer, you were probably looking at print quality. Why take a chance on compromising that print quality to save a few bucks?

I know I'll probably have tons of e-mail over this from people who refill their cartridges with no trouble. But - you asked my opinion :-)

Tip of the Day

Faster File Access

Web link - http://www.worldstart.com/tips/fastfile.htm

Has your Internet Explorer been taken over? You know, does it have some company's name in the title bar or maybe a spinning logo that your ISP tricked into the corner (that logo is actually called a "throbber" - no kidding!)? For example, one of our computers would display the page title and follow it up with "Provided by Compaq" or some such corperate branding trick.

Well, do you want to reclaim your browser? Are you ready to take back what's yours?

To make Explorer look like its happy little default self, do the following:

1. Make sure you don't ahve a browser window open

2. Hit the Start button, Run

3. Type this line is (or copy & paste):

rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear

Click OK

You'll disover that absoutely nothing seems to happen. However, before you decide that I'm just telling you to type in jibberish just to see if you'll do it,

Restart Explorer and you should find it's back to it's old self.

PS - If anyone knows how to change the little throbber (spinning logo), let me know. I've never run across that one.

Amanda's Cool Site of the Day

A Shameless Plug

Ah, the site of the day, it breaks my heart but I can’t resist – today’s site of the day is the archive section of WorldStart. You’ve all begged us to put up archives of both Steve’s Computer Tips and my Cool Sites, so we did. We worked long and hard to get this part of our site up. I hope you enjoy it.

Do you have a cool site that you want to share? Send it to Amanda! Here's her address:

Oh, and we're looking for non-commercial sites. We generally don't run sites that are strictly for shopping.
