Ah, It's So Clean!

Our free download this week is The Cleaner. We've featured this before, but we have had so many requests that we wanted to mention it again.

This program "cleans" e-mail messages - you know, it gets rid of the forward marks ">>>" bad spacing, extra line breaks, etc. Just copy & paste your message into The Cleaner, hit "Clean", and presto - your message sparkles and shines. Too bad it doesn't work on dishes :-)

Computers 101

Q:
Is there some way that I can obtain Microsoft help without calling and waiting on hold until my computer becomes even more outdated than it already is?

A:
Yes! The most under used resource available for free to every computer user is the Microsoft Help and Support Center.

Should you encounter a problem or desire to accomplish a task and don’t know the procedure or method to do so, try the Help system that is part of virtually every application on your computer including the Operating System

Access Windows Help by clicking on Start, then click on Help. You can also access context sensitive Help by pressing F1. Context sensitive means that the Help screen that opens will be related to whatever you were doing or wherever the mouse pointer was clicked last.

Windows 98

Windows XP

Pressing F1 or clicking the ? on a toolbar in MS Office applications opens an Assistant screen. Enter a question and the Assistant will provide one or more possible solutions.

Help on the Menu Bar (usually the top bar just under the title, with File, Edit, View, etc.) opens the Help System in any application that provides on-line help.

Some applications place a question mark (?) near the Min-Max-Close buttons in the upper right corner of a window. When it’s there, you can click on the “?” then click on a an item of interest in that window and an explanation of the item pops-up, if available.

Check out the tip below to find out more on the basics of navigating through the Help system.

Tip of the Day

Help!

Is the Help System in the program you are using too daunting and intimidating?

The following is a generic guide to Help windows. Depending upon the application you are using, some, most or all of this information can be applicable.

Observe the title on the Help window to insure you are in the right Help system.

A Help window usually has three tabs or methods of finding the help you need. The tabs are labeled Contents, Index, and Search or Find.

Microsoft Word Help

Microsoft Internet Explorer Help

Contents, as the name implies, is a Table of Contents of that Help system. Click on a book or line item to expand to the next level of detail. There may be several levels before you reach the actual subject you need.

Index presents a list of indexed items that you can scroll through or you can type a word or phrase in the entry field to view indexed items that match your entry.

Search or Find is similar to Index except it actually searches for an occurrence of the entry in the text of a subject.

An important option is the “Print” option found under the Option menu. Printing a hard copy of the Help information allows you to perform a procedure without trying to split the screen or constantly switching back and forth from Help to your application. A little ink and a sheet of paper are inexpensive for the convenience a printout provides.

I keep a manila folder handy for saving Help printouts. If a problem occurs infrequently or a process used only occasionally, the printout avoids problems with brain fade or data loss in my “gray matter” RAM.

Every application providing a Help system is designed to assist the user while using that application. It might look overwhelming at first, but once you become familiar with it, it can be a lot of help!
