Computers 101

Q: When I drag and drop files, how do I know what is happening to them? Are they being moved, copied, or is Windows just creating a short cut?

A: One day while dragging and dropping I actually paid attention and realized that Windows does tell you what it's doing as you move the file. If you see a "+" sign in a little white box, the file is being copied. If you see an arrow, Windows is creating a shortcut. Finally, if you see nothing at all, the file is being moved.

OK here's a new problem. What happens if you're trying to move say, a program file (a file ending in ".exe"), and Windows wants to do a shortcut instead of a move? Or maybe you want to make a copy of a file and Windows wants to move it?

Well, there's an easy solution for that as well. Just drag and drop with your RIGHT mouse button. When you release the button, you'll be given a little menu that allows you to pick Move, Copy, Create Shortcut, or Cancel.

In case you're wondering, I'm a right-click drag and dropper now :-)

Tip of the Day

Dragging to Minimized Windows

While we're on the subject of dragging and dropping... do you know what I hate? Trying to drag something to a folder when the stupid thing is minimized. There you are, looking like an idiot with your finger down on the left mouse button with nowhere to drop. What can you do?

Easy - yell at your computer and curse at Microsoft.

After that, try this:

1. Grab the item and drag it to the taskbar button of the minimized folder.

2. Hold the mouse cursor over the button for a few seconds, the folder will open back up.

3. Drop the file into the folder and take back what you said about Microsoft (well, you don't have to do that last part :-)

Cool huh?

Amanda's Cool Site of the Day

Virtual Fish Tank

Like Fish, but don't want the upkeep? Well now you can get your fish fix by using the virtual fish tank. You'll need to have Macromedia's Shockwave to use this site. If you don't have shockwave this site will direct you to it. If you're really curious how this whole site works check out their Technical Stuff Section.

From their Press box: "The Virtual FishTank(TM) exhibit teaches lessons about emergent behavior, group behavior and modeling. The rich functionality of VirtualFishtank.com will enable parents and educators to enhance the educational experience by planning pre and post Museum visit online exercises."

Now for the fun info! You get to build your own fish. That's right you get to design it, and then   you can save it and release at the Museum of Science's virtual fish tank or you can release your fish into the simulated online fish tank.

Registering is free and only takes a minute and gives you the option of having four fish. This is a great site for both kids and adults. I'm really excited about it, and can't wait to release my fishies into the tank. Enjoy!
