Q: What are .pdf files?

A:
If you've been using the internet for any amount of time, you've probably run across these little buggers. They're Adobe Acrobat files. Normally, you download them and use Adobe Acrobat Reader to read them. You can get Adobe Acrobat Reader for free at Adobe's web site...

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

People use PDF files for everything. The most common use seems to be documents (both interactive and regular), but I've also seen PDF files used for maps, catalogs, presentations, and even e-books. Additionally, I've seen it used for non-web applications as well, including stuff like software help files.

Some Adobe products such as Pagemaker and Illustrator let you save a file as a PDF file. The only other ways are to fork out the big bucks for the Acrobat program, or create PDF files online (5 times for free or subscribe to use). To turn your documents into pdf files online, follow this link...

Tip of the Day

Easy Scrolling

Here's a quick little trick with MS Internet Explorer's scroll bar.

Most of us usually grab the scroll bar when we go to scroll down the length of a web page (well, unless you have one of those little scroll mice).

Another way is to right-click the scrollbar. A little menu will pop up that's chuck full of scrolling options.

Give it a try.

Amanda's Cool Site of the Day

Spy Checker

Yesterday's newsletter about spyware filled my email with gigabytes of response. One was, "How do I know if a program I am downloading is spyware?"

Well, if you want to find out if a freeware program you are about to download is spyware, adware, or will install third-party components (foistware) on your system, this is where to go.

Just type in the program in question and find out. You will find a link to the company's privacy statement so you can read exactly what information will be collected and how it will be used before you download. I was surprised to find familiar names like RealAudio, which tracks your downloads and listening habits.

So, before you download, check it out and find out just how much security you'll be giving away.
