Everyone's Getting Theirs!

Wow, once again we had an incredible response to our Mcafee Anti-Virus and Firewall bundle. A big thank you to everyone who ordered!

If you missed out, we still have some in stock, and they are still on sale for just $14.97 between now and Sunday (04-20-2003). Most retail stores sell these for around $60.00, so this is one heck of a buy!

Again, this current version of the software has been improved from previous versions (that's why I'm happy to recommend it) and it's very (very) user friendly. We use it on several computers here at WorldStart and it's been great!

The anti-virus part monitors e-mail attachments, Internet downloads, shared disks, CD-ROMs, and synchronization with your PDA. It also detects destructive ActiveX and Java applets, which are often downloaded without your knowledge while you browse.

Oh, it also watches for suspicious activity - helping you catch new viruses that have yet to be reported. Cool huh?

The firewall is also fantastic. I found it to be one of the most user friendly I've run across. It monitors all your internet traffic - keeping hackers out and your private information in (your AV software won't keep hackers out). It also does a great job of monitoring programs that are trying to access the internet. Great way to keep spyware at bay.

Between this program's Anti-Virus and Firewall (plus the automatic updates), you are about as safe as you can be online.

Those are just the highlights. Want to know more? Take a look and see for yourself why we think this new program is so good:

PS - Between smarter viruses and better hackers, the internet gets more dangerous by the minute. For $14.97, it's crazy not to protect yourself - grab this now :-)

Computers 101

Q:
What is the difference between Downloading, Uploading and Installing?

A:
Here's a blow by blow:

Downloading - This is moving a file that's on the Internet (or over a network) onto your computer. For most of us, downloading is just a matter of clicking a download link on a web site and saving the file to disk. If you want more info on downloading, be sure to check out our download guide at http://www.worldstart.com/guides/download.htm.

Uploading - This is the opposite of downloading. With uploading, you take a file from your computer and send it to a computer on the internet (or a computer / server on a network). Usually this is done with an FTP client, but some web sites you'll come across will allow you to send files to them with your web browser.

Installing - This is often confused with downloading, but it's a different animal. When you install something, you basically "put" the program on your computer so you can use it. Normally this is done via a setup program or "wizard" to make installation easy. Once you're finished installing a program, you can usually run it from your Start Menu, Programs area.

Tip of the Day

Window States

Ever have a program that always starts in a "normal" state but you really want it maximized?

Well, here's a little trick to help you do just that (and more) with a quick little bit of shortcut editing. Note: although this seems to work on most programs, sometimes you'll run across a program that just won't cooperate.

1. First, right-click the shortcut to the program and select Properties.

2. Under the Shortcut tab, you'll see a drop box labeled "Run." In that box, you'll find options to run the program as either Normal (it starts up at it's default size), Minimized (it starts up minimized to the toolbar), or Maximized (it starts up full screen).

Select the start-up state you want and you're all set.

I tried this with Internet Explorer to prevent the small browser window problem. It works when clicking the desktop or start menu shortcut, but if you open links in a new window (Shift+click) it will still default to the last window size you used.

Amanda's Cool Site of the Day

The Easter Egg Archive

This site has nothing to do with brightly colored edible eggs and everything to do with those little surprises that are programmed into software that you use on the computer. Their definition of an Easter egg is “any amusing tidbit that creators hid in their creations. They could be in computer software, movies, music, art, books, or even your watch. There are thousands of them, and they can be quite entertaining, if you know where to look.”

This site is an archive of different Easter eggs. I checked out their top 25 and was greatly surprised at some of them. I’d never even think to do some of things to find these critters. Ready to start your Easter egg hunt?
