Announcements

Welcome Back :-)

Hello everyone.

Hope you all had a great holiday - I know I did. Sorry this is a day late, e-mail server problems.

It's hard to believe that we're looking at the end of the year already. Where has all the time gone?

Also - I wanted to let you know that since next Tuesday is New Year's Eve we won't be publishing MS Office Tips on that day.

I wish you all a very happy and safe New Year and I'll talk to you again in 2003.

Be Careful! Lots Of Viruses On The Loose!

We've been seeing TONS of e-mail viruses lately (someone got a monster and it sent me 500+ infected e-mails). So we've decided to put Norton Anti-virus 2002 on sale for only 12.97!!!! Lowest Price of the YEAR!

Let me tell ya, I get a dozen e-mails a day from people who have been hit by viruses. In many cases, they lose all their data, get personal info stolen, have to re-install windows, or deal with any number of other problems.

So, I always recommend running anti-virus software.

As many of you already know, I think Norton AV 2002 is the one of the best anti-virus programs available. It can scan e-mail, downloads, protect against malicious java scripts, and just about everything else. It's really easy to use and seems to be at the top spot in every comparison of AV software I've seen.

The feature I like the best about this software is the way it automatically updates itself. It automatically checks for - and downloads - virus updates while you're online. No messing around with manual updates or forgetting to get the current virus definitions. Great huh?

Isn't keeping your computer virus free worth $12.97? If you've ever been infected with a virus, I know you're shouting "YES!" Don't be like the guy who didn't buy AV software until after his computer was infected and information lost (believe me, he'll tell ya $12.97 is a deal!)

Please, if you don't have good, up to date, anti-virus software, grab this deal. Your computer will thank you for it :-)

Oh, and if you prefer Mcafee, we have that too -

MS Office 101

Now Why Did It Capitalize That?

Ever find yourself irritated with MS Word because it keeps capitalizing the first letter of everything it perceives to be a sentence?

(If you've ever made a list of things that shouldn't be capitalized you know what I mean. You're constantly fighting Word as it continually capitalizes stuff without your permission.)

Want to turn that little "feature" off?

Yes - I thought you'd say that.

To turn off the capitalization feature simply go to the Tools menu, AutoCorrect Choice.

Now on the AutoCorrect tab, you're looking for the Capitalize first letter of sentences.

Uncheck the box and click OK.

That's it - now you're free of the capitalization monster!

Office Tip of the Day

Mouseless Font Control

Are you a person who is constantly trying to escape the mouse? You've learned everything you can about using keyboard shortcuts but still find yourself annoyed every time you try to change the font style or size?

You know, over to the mouse, click on the font name, scroll through the list until you find what you're looking for, click on the font name, then click on the font size scrollbar, and so on. Get the idea? Did you hear all the clicks?

Want some keyboard shortcuts to get around the clicking nightmare?

Yes?

Well - then read on.

First of all, let's address the font style.

To access the font type list you'll need to use Ctrl + Shift + F.

This will highlight the current font name in the list and allow you to have control over the list using the arrow keys.

You can scroll up and down with the arrows, basically browsing your options the same as you would with your mouse.

-OR-

If you know the name of the font you're looking for you can type in the name - however - the spelling must be exactly correct and include the correct capital letters.

-OR-

If you know the name of the font, but not the correct spelling, then just type the first letter of the name - which will take you to that part of the list - and then use the arrow keys to find the correct font.

Whatever method you use to find the name of the font you're looking for, hit the Enter key when you're done.

Poof! Font changed.

Now to move on to changing the font size.

In previous issues we've covered the keyboard choices of Ctrl + Shift + > or Ctrl + ] to increase font size.

We also discussed, Ctrl + Shift + < or Ctrl + [ to decrease font size.

These methods work well and are efficient. The key combinations using < and > will increase or decrease font size according to the sizes listed in the font size drop-down list. The other combinations using [ and ] increase or decrease font size one point at a time.

But, what about the times when you need to set a font like 14.5? (After all - who wants to be just like everyone else using the regular font sizes? Let's be unique!)

Can it be done?

Yep.

Simply use the key combination of Ctrl + Shift + P. This will highlight the current font size in the font size drop-down list.

Now all you have to do is enter the font size you'd like and hit the Enter key.

Presto! Custom font size for only a few keystrokes.

Here's to being unique!
