MS Office 101

Quick Word Erasing

We all know that the Backspace key will delete one character to the left of the cursor and that the Delete key will delete one character to the right of the cursor.

But… have you ever tried using the Ctrl key in combination with either the Backspace or Delete keys?

No?

Well - then you should because you're missing out! (OK - maybe it's not as good as… let's say ice cream… but it's certainly a handy thing to know about.)

  • Ctrl + Backspace will delete one word to the left of the cursor.
  • Ctrl + Delete will delete one word to the right of the cursor.

Give it a whirl - you may find it's the simplest piece of useful information you've learned in a long time.

Office Tip of the Day

Working Mouse-Free With The MS Office Assistant

Here's another little gem for the mouse-free enthusiasts.

This one applies to your handy, dandy Office Assistant. (You know - the annoying paperclip guy you only open when you absolutely have to.)

To be honest, this is one area where I never even thought of using key combinations to speed up my work - but it can be done.

Let's start with some general-use keys:

  • The first key you need to know about is F1. This key will activate the Office Assistant if he's shut off or it will open his help balloon if he's already running.
  • The next key I should mention is the Tab key. This one is a multi-purpose key. It will allow you to tab to any selection in the help balloon.
  • The Enter key can be used to select / activate anything that you've tabbed to.

Now here's a list of specialized key combinations that may be faster than the continual tabbing through every option in the balloon.

  • Alt + number will select a topic from the Assistant's list. (The first topic is #1, the second is #2, and so on.)
  • Alt + Down Arrow is selecting the choice of "See more…"
  • Alt + Up Arrow is to select the choice of "See previous…"
  • Esc will close a tip or the help balloon. (Whichever is currently active.)

Keys for the Tips button from the help balloon:

  • Alt + N will move you to the next tip.
  • Alt + B will move you back to the previous tip.

(And, of course, Esc will close the Tip window for you - never forget to combine all the info!)

Maybe we will have some kinder words for the little Assistant guy now that we have a faster way to control him…

…or maybe not.
