Eight years ago, the iPod music player was Apple’s crown jewel. The little music maker is credited with launching the digital music industry and completely changing the way the world listens to music.
Now the iPod, which hasn’t had an update in three years, is to longer featured at the top of Apple’s homepage with the company’s other hardware like the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
iPod sales peaked in 2009 and have steadily declined since, the company is no longer even releasing the sales figures. What killed the iPod? iPhones, Android phones and Windows phones can all be used as music players without the need to carry a separate device.
Just like point and shoot cameras, music players have been absorbed by smartphones. There have been rumors that Apple might revamp the iPod touch, but there’s nothing definite.
