Are You Sure You Typed That Right?

Monday, June 9th, 2014 by | Filed Under: Quick Tips

I’m here today to discuss the dot that nearly drove me insane. For months I was unable to send e-mail from my smartphone, even though I could receive it. I knew something had to be wrong with my outgoing settings, but I couldn’t figure out what. Yesterday I discovered the culprit. A dot, a devilish dot that my eyes had refused to see. I would have sworn that my outgoing e-mail address was typed correctly. What I didn’t see on that tiny little phone screen was that I had actually typed – there was an extra dot in there causing my mail delivery to fail.

Which brings me to the most common reason your password or product key may not work: the dreaded typo. It could be an extra character or space. Maybe a capital letter or an O instead of a zero.  Look carefully and try clearing out any password your browser remembers. Our eyes have a way of filling in what they expect to see and tricking us.

In the case of a product key, consider having someone else look at it and type it in. If no one is there, send a photo or a scan of the key to a friend and have them e-mail you what they see and try to copy/paste that into the required field.

…or, quit trying to use your phone as a laptop/desktop, and stop struggling or ruining your eyes trying to make out what is on that tiny screen. Yes, “road warrior”, blah, blah, blah, but modern businessmen got along just fine before the proliferation of smartphones. Not every email, or text, in fact, most of them, are not so important that they need immediate replies.
