Audio Problems With Skype

Monday, April 18th, 2011 by | Filed Under: Social Networking

Clay from Lexington, NC asks:

I just bought a headset microphone and I am trying to use it with Skype, but I am not having any luck. I have gone to Control Panel, speech, audio and set that up no luck; opened accessibility then sound recorder which works but when I go back to Skype, still no luck. I hope that you will be able to help me with this. Thank you very much for looking into this for me.

Hi Clay. If your headset and microphone is working fine when you test it in your PC’s Control Panel, then it’s time to check out the audio options within Skype itself. To do that, open Skype and click Tools, then Options.

Skype Options

Next, click on the Audio Settings tab on the left hand side of the window.

Skype Audio Settings

Look at the dropdown menu next to the picture of the microphone. It shows what Skype has set as the microphone to make your calls. You may need to change this so that Skype recognizes the new headset that you bought. So, simply click on the dropdown bar and select another device.

Mic Select

It may also be worth unchecking the box next to Automatically adjust microphone settings. This lets you manually select the volume level for your microphone. Set it to the maximum level and see if that makes a difference or not.

You can check if these changes work by making a test call on Skype. Look for the option to Make a free test call at the bottom of the Options window, and click it to get started. It allows you to test your audio equipment by recording a short message and having it played back to you.

Otherwise, it is always worth checking to see that you have the latest version of Skype installed on your computer. To do that, click Help, and then Check for Updates. It is always best to update Skype to the latest version in order to ensure that it works as well as it can and is compatible with all the latest hardware you might use with it.

Skype Updates

Hopefully this will be enough to get you going and using Skype the way you want to. Just be sure to check out our full Skype tutorial for more useful tips.
