Q:
Can you please tell us what all was included with the Windows Updates for August 2008?

A:
I would love to! I was going to do that today anyway, so I’m glad you asked. Just like this time every month, the Windows Updates for August 2008 were released this week and if you haven’t installed them yet, you really should do so soon. And just like the person who asked today’s question, I’m sure there are several of you who are wondering what was included with the updates this month. Well, lucky for you, I’m here to fill you in. There were a lot of changes this time around, so let’s stop wasting time and get right down to business!

Eleven updates came through this month, six of which were listed as critical and five as important. Here’s a quick rundown of the critical updates for you:

  • Vulnerability in the Microsoft Windows image color management system that could allow for remote code execution.
  • Cumulative security upgrade for Internet Explorer.
  • Vulnerability in the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer that could allow for remote code execution.
  • Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel that could allow for remote code execution.
  • Vulnerabilities in Microsoft PowerPoint that could allow for remote code execution.
  • Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office filters that could allow for remote code execution.

Now, here are the important updates:

  • Vulnerability in IPsec policy processing that could allow for information disclosure.
  • Vulnerabilities in the event system that could allow for remote code execution.
  • Security update for Outlook Express and Windows Mail.
  • Vulnerability in Windows Messenger that could allow for information disclosure.
  • Vulnerability in Microsoft Word that could allow for remote code execution.

There were also a few other small changes made and of course, the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool was updated for the month as well. Again, if you haven’t installed the Windows Updates for August 2008 yet, you better get to it. I’m sure the little update icon is just waiting for you to click on it down in your system tray. Once you do, your computer will be fully protected for yet another month. Oh yeah!
