Avatar Resizer

Q:
So, tell us, how can we resize our avatars? I’ve been trying to put one on your message board for the longest time, but it just won’t accept it. No matter what I do, it’s always too big. Please help!

A:
Well, I’m sure you all can guess that today’s question is a spin off from the quick tip up above, but I just had to connect these two together somehow! After I’m finished, I think you will really appreciate it though. I have a feeling that a lot of you have struggled with the avatar sizing issues before and if you haven’t given up yet, you’re probably about ready to. Well, giving up is the last thing I want you to do, so hopefully this tip will bring some hope back into your online life. Check it out!

I’m going to be talking about an avatar resizing tool called JQL Avatar Sizer. Now, I have to give props to a member of our message board for giving me this idea. I’m sure everyone who uses the board has probably already read about this, but I thought by putting it in the newsletter too, a lot more of our readers could take advantage of this. And hey, it may also bring some more traffic to our forum, which just means more people will be getting some great computer advice! (In case you haven’t used our message board before, you can register for it right here).

Alright, the first thing you’ll need to do is download the Avatar Sizer. Visit this Web site and click on the link that says “Download Avatar Sizer here.” Now, when you do that, the next page will ask you for a donation. They want you to donate at least $5.00 to their site, because it is completely run by donations, etc., etc. You DO NOT need to donate anything though. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page under the Download section. There is a link there that you can use to go straight to the download. (Of course, you can donate if you feel the need, but just so you know, it’s not required).

When the next page comes up, click again on the link that says “Click here to download.” This will finally start the process. Click Run twice and let it go. The setup wizard will then appear on your screen. Click Next and then hit the button for “I accept the terms in the License Agreement.” Click Next one more time and then a window will come up listing all the features of Avatar Sizer. You can read through those just to get a better feel for the program. When you’re done, click Next. The next part will place the program in your Program Files folder. If that’s okay with you, click Next to continue. If you want to place it somewhere else, click Browse and choose your destination. Click Next when you’re done. Then click Install and then Finish to Launch Avatar Sizer.

The next screen you’ll see is a welcome to you. Read through it and click Next when you’re ready to begin resizing your avatar! Hit the Browse button and find the picture you want to use as your very own avatar. My example for this is going to a yellow flower. Find your picture, select it and click Open. That will put your picture into the Avatar Sizer program. Now, the next thing you’ll want to do is change the width and height of the image. For example, as I said up above, WorldStart’s sizes are 100×100, but change yours to what they need to be for wherever you’re putting your avatar. Just use the up and down arrows to get the correct sizes you need.

When you’re all set, click Next and you will see a preview of your avatar. Click Save and then give your new image a name. You may want to name it something like “Flower Resized.” That way, you’ll know which one to choose when you go to put it in the actual forum area. If you’re done resizing, click Exit or if you want to resize some more pictures, go ahead and do so. Note: When you click Exit, the program will ask for your donation again, but just hit the Close button and continue on.

Okay, now we need to go to where you want to put your avatar. I’m going to use WorldStart’s message board as my example. Go ahead and log in and then click on the User CP link at the top of the page. From there, click on Edit Avatar. Next, click on the button for Use Custom Avatar and click the Browse button. Find your new resized image and select it. Click Open and then Save Changes. Once you do that, you can go back into the forum and you’ll be able to see your new avatar. It looks nice, doesn’t it?!

Now, I’m going to guess that a lot of you will be using this program quite often (probably every time you change your avatar, right?), so you might want to consider putting an icon on your desktop for it. That will give you much easier access to the program when you need it. To do this, right click on your desktop and go to New, Shortcut. Hit the Browse button and look for Avatar Sizer under your Program Files (My Computer, C: drive, Program Files). Choose the Avatar.exe choice and then click OK. Then click Next and Finish. That’s all there is to it! That was all pretty painless, wasn’t it? And now, you get to have the avatars you’ve always wanted. Enjoy them!
