Bill Gates Steps Down
I’m sure most of you have already heard the news, but just in case you didn’t see all of the headlines, I’m here today to fill you in! As you can see, Friday, June 27, 2008 was Bill Gates’ last day as commander in chief of the Microsoft Corporation. Gates, age 52, decided to retire from the company so that he could focus more on charity work in hopes of fighting disease, reducing poverty and improving education. As he retires, he is ranked the third richest person in the world. Not too shabby, huh?!
Gates and his childhood friend Paul Allen started the Microsoft company in a garage back in 1975. He always had a fascination with computer codes and he ended up turning that into a software empire that has been going strong for many years now. He will, of course, remain the biggest shareholder for Microsoft and he will still act as the chairman of the company’s board of directors. Three other people will fill Gates’ shoes, including Ray Ozzie, Craig Mundie and Steve Ballmer.
Mr. Gates and his wife Melinda started the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation back in 2000 and he said most of his free time will go into that. Gates is recognized as a genius when it comes to computers, but he feels his time now needs to be focused on humanitarian work. I’m sure we’ll still be hearing Bill Gates’ name from time to time, but until then, let’s wish him a happy retirement. After all, he is the man to thank for all of the Microsoft products you use on a daily basis. Here’s to you, Mr. Gates!
