Border It Quick

Border It Quick

Often times, I find that when working in MS Excel, I’m trying to put a border around a cell or a group of cells. I’m sure many of you do the same, am I right?

So, what can you do?

Well, you select the cell(s) to be bordered, use the mouse to either set the borders from the handy button on the toolbar/ribbon or you can navigate to the Format Cells dialogue window and work through that process.

Either way you cut it, you’re using precious time going back and forth from the keyboard to the mouse and back again and again.

Now, for many of you, you’re quite happy with that process. But, on the other end of the spectrum, there are those of you who are always looking for the key combination that will minimize your mouse use.

So, for those of you in the “pro key combination” mindset, here are a couple of combinations to help with your border issues.

First, you’ll need to select the cell or cells to be bordered. If you select multiple cells, the border will outline the entire group.

Also, don’t forget that the selection can be done with the Shift key and arrow combinations to expand the cell selection.

Now, with your cell(s) still selected, hit Ctrl + Shift + &.

Voila. Your cell(s) now have an outline border!

Change your mind?

No problem!

Select the cell(s) again and use Ctrl + Shift + _.

The border is gone!

Just one more thought: if you need several adjacent cells to all be bordered individually, assuming there’s not so many as to make the mouse a better choice, you can border adjacent cells using Ctrl + Shift + &. It’s not a toggle combination, so the second application doesn’t remove the adjacent portion of the first border. Enjoy!
