Borrowing eBooks With Other People’s Library Cards

Monday, April 28th, 2014 by | Filed Under: eReaders

Rena from NY, Ny writes:

Hi.  If you have a library card , go to your library and get a  pin #  , then download overdrive media (app store for free )  then you will have 1000’s + of audio books to choose from.  I have 5 library cards,   So I can download from all over the USA.   Got the cards from my relatives  who don’t do downloads   Great selections .  All you need is proof of name and address and you can get a card.

While I agree wholeheartedly with you about Overdrive. We’ve talked about it before in articles, I will caution you not to use  your relatives’ library cards. Using someone else’s information to register for the app is likely a violation of the terms of service of both the app and of the agreement your relative had with the library. I would never encourage anyone to use someone else’s name to log into or register for anything.

Libraries pay for the rights to lend eBooks the same way they purchase physical copies. That’s why there are a limited number of copies of particular eBooks available to loan. Library systems are funded by the tax money of the residents of that area.  If someone from out of town borrows an eBook, that’s one less copy available for the patrons of the library who are actually funding the service. Now many libraries do allow residents of other communities within the state to take out library cards and some will even permit out-of-state residents to take out a card for a fee.

I would encourage anyone who enjoys reading eBooks or listening to audio books to check out the OverDrive app. Also check with your local library to see what other services they may be affiliated with. You’ll find that there’s a wide range of digital books, music and videos available.

Thank you for posting this reply-warning to the person who mailed in the question. It not only could be against the terms of agreement, but it’s also about ones own personal integrity as even though the relatives may not be checking out materials, it’s still not the right thing to do.

Excellent advice!! Although, I doubt if it will be followed.
