Can Anything Open Pagemaker 7 Files?

A reader can’t open some files she needs to access:  “Do you know of any program that would open, read and copy those files made with Pagemaker 7 and possibly convert them over to another word processor? I have multiple files on my external hard drive that were made using Pagemaker 7. I also have the Pagemaker 7 disc that I bought years ago. Am now using my son-in-law’s all-in-one HP computer that has no disk drive. I tried using a portable DVD drive that I got from Amazon, but that wouldn’t work with the CD disk that I have. I took that Pagemaker 7 CD to Office Depot to see if they could convert it over to a Flash Drive so I could install the program onto this computer, but they said they couldn’t do it because that would be \"pirating\", or something to that effect. I sure never thought this would happen – an all-in-one with no disc drive. I have truly become a dinosaur.”

You aren’t a dinosaur, but I can’t say the same for Pagemaker. Even if you had a CD drive, the problem would be that no currently supported OS can be guaranteed to work with Pagemaker 7.

Before I start this rescue mission, it’s a good time to point out that if you have a program that saves files in a proprietary format, it’s a good idea to export some copies into other formats that can work on multiple programs — just in case.

If you’re ready to embark on our rescue mission,  you can go here and download this free trial copy of Adobe Pagemaker 7. Make sure you click the green Download Button and none of the other pop-ups.

If you are able to get the program up and running you can then try the export functions to save the files in a more usable format.  If anyone else has some good suggestions for opening these types of files, let us know in the comments.

My PageMaker 7 Program and Files both work with Windows 10. An external CD Drive connected via USB should work to reinstall the client to the new computer. The serial number (ID number) will be required to complete the installation. PageMaker 7 was upgraded to InDesign.

I was recently forced to abandon my beloved, ancient Grandpa XP for Windows 10. I was surprised at the number of legacy programs and peripherals that can be made to run (even some written for DOS in the Win3 era). I was also surprised that, for nearly every type of file, there is a converter. Search for “convert .xyz” or whatever is your file type. Someone wants your business!! I have some old programs that are running, but I will need to make an orderly transition out of them because they have become abandonware. This will not be nearly as difficult as my first nightmares indicated. Also, if you have some abandonware but lack your activation key, sometimes you can buy one. I’m not sure how honest some of these sites are, but no one is being harmed if no one is selling or supporting the subject program.

I have found Libreoffice can open most any file as long as it’s not corrupted. Libreoffice is a free download office suite like Excel. Try it!
