Can I Have An IP Address Without Being Connected To The Internet?

Sunday, March 30th, 2014 by | Filed Under: Quick Tips, Uncategorized, Using The Internet

How can we detect IP address and DNS address without connecting to the Internet?

Your IP address is assigned to your computer, generally by your router, and is required for Internet access. In most cases, you need to be connected to the Internet to receive an IP address. However, if you are set up with a static or manual IP, it will stay the same and may show up even if you are not connected. The easiest way to check your address is to open a command prompt by going to the start menu and typing Run, then typing cmd in the box that pops up. On Windows 8.1, you can right click the Windows icon in the task bar and click on Command Prompt. Type ipconfig /all in the box that pops up.

Look under Ethernet adapter Local Connection, Ethernet, or Wireless. If you are not connected to the Internet, you will not see a listing of the IP address. A DNS address is the same, you must be connected to the Internet in order to see the address. You will also see your Physical Address, which is the MAC address if you needed that to connect to a device or network.
