I still have an old computer with Windows 95 hanging around, would Linux Ubuntu work here? Also how about the VLC media player?

For Ubuntu 12.04 the recommended system requirements are a 700 mHz processor (Intel Celeron or better),  512 megabytes of RAM and a 5 gigabyte hard-drive.  You’ll also need VGA capable of 1024 x 768 screen resolution and CD/DVD drive or USB port to complete the installation.

There are also the alternatives of Xubuntu or Lubuntu for lighter weight systems.  Minimum requirments for Xubuntu would be 512 MB of RAM, 5 GB of hard drive space and a graphics card and monitor capable of 800 x 600 resolution.

Your Windows 95 computer probably doesn’t meet these minimums. VLC Player is available for systems running Windows XP SP2 and later. If you could get Ubuntu up and running on a computer, you could run the Ubuntu version of VLC Player.
