Can I Watch DVD Movies & TV Shows On My Computer?

Wednesday, February 5th, 2014 by | Filed Under: Blu-Ray, Hardware & Peripherals, Windows 8

Robert from Mississippi writes:

Like to know if you can play  DVD  movies and DVD TV shows on your computer. I not sure what this means. I checked device manager and it said  DVD/DC ROM drive, so does that mean you can play DVDs you buy from the store or what?  Totally lost.

The answer is yes. You can play DVDs of movies and TV shows on a computer that has a DVD drive. But that doesn’t mean you are equipped to do it on your computer. A DVD is a storage medium. When you have data on a DVD, you’ll also need to make sure you have a program that can open that data. If you have a DVD full of documents, you’ll need a program that can read text on your computer. If you have a DVD full of PowerPoint presentations, you’d need that program to read that data.

You’ll need to make sure you have a program that can read the data on a DVD disc with a movie or TV show on it. Many computers come with programs that will play DVD movies.  If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you should have Windows Media Center on your computer, you should be able to play a DVD.

If it doesn’t open automatically when you put in a DVD, search for Windows Media Center in the start menu and open. Then select Movies.

One of the option will be to play dvd.

You could also use other DVD player programs as well. Now if you are using Windows 8 or 8.1, you do not have Windows Media Center. You’ll need to go to the Windows App Store and either purchase or find a free app that allows you to play DVDs.

A great free option is VLC Media Player. You can learn all about that, here.

Also, you won’t able to play Blu-Ray DVDs unless you have a Blu-Ray player drive installed in your computer.
