Can’t Sleep? Kill Your Screens

Having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep at night? It’s time to ditch the electronics at bedtime.

While playing a game, checking your Facebook, or even watching a video seems like a great way to wind down, the light from the screen can actually stimulate you and make it harder to go to sleep. The blue light given off by LED screens tells your brain that it’s daytime and time to get up.  Try putting all of your devices away an hour or two before bed. Read a physical book or a non-backlit eReader or just listen to music.

Also, the absolute worst thing to do if you wake up in the night is to pick up your phone or tablet or turn on your PC. You’ll just wake yourself up more.

There are apps out there that will adjust the brightness of your screen as you approach bedtime, but your best bet is to quite your mind and turn off your electronics.

    Thanks for the useful article. There are apps that will shift the blue light to red. I have been using Twilight, an app for Android phones for a few months now. You can set your own times for it to automatically go on or off, or you can have it use the sunset to sunrise times based on your time zone.
    I find that it effectively removes the blue light that interferes with my sleeping.
    For PC’s there is F.Lux which does the same.

    I swear Cynthia, you know everything. My daughter says she CAN’T fall asleep without having her TV on plus a lamp. I’ve told her 100 times she’s not getting her “deep sleep” or I think they call it REM sleep, that her brain can still hear the TV so she never gets decent sleep so maybe if I show her your article, she’ll listen to you!!
