Change Windows System Language: Part 2

Thursday, April 27th, 2017 by | Filed Under: Desktop Enhancement, Windows 10

Yesterday in part 1 of this tip, we learned that changing the Windows system language isn’t necessarily easy in home editions of Windows 10. We checked our system build and downloaded the Today we’ll look at how to change the language using the Dism.exe tool, which will allow us to change the language package that we have installed from the Command Prompt.

Make sure you follow it systematically to avoid any issues, do not restart the PC until the whole process has ended and do this at your own risk.

Step 1 – Download the corresponding language package for your system (links at the end of the tutorial)

After downloading the package, you will notice that it has a long name like lp_9d70f4d51680deaaf951eccb6c2216fc3b9ef368.cab, rename it to LP.cab and place it in the system root directory (C:\) so it is easier to call it from the Command Prompt.

To place it in the root directory, just go to “This PC” icon on your Desktop or write “PC” on the start menu, then double click on your C:\ disk and paste it right there.

Step 2 – Press Windows + X combination and click on Command Prompt (Admin)

Step 3 – In the console, type the following command:

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:c:\LP.cab

This will install the language package that you downloaded, if it asks if you want to reboot (happens in some cases) just press N.

Step 4 – After getting the completed operation message, We will check that everything is alright with this command: dism /online /get-packages

That will show you which packages are installed in your computer. The window will show the language packages on the top of the list.

As you can see, there are two language packages. The US English one that was already installed and the Spanish new one.

Step 5 – Delete the package that you don’t want. Take note of the package identity that appeared in the package list and copy it to the clipboard (press Ctrl + M and then click on the text that you want to select from the command prompt). In this case I will delete the package that I just installed (Spanish one) since I want to keep my system language in English.

Step 6 – Proceed to delete the package. Take this command, and complete it with the package identity that you copied in the previous step (the one that you want to delete). Don’t leave blank spaces between the colon (:) and the package id.

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:

It should look like this:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~es-ES~10.0.14393.0

Step 7 – After process is completed, press N if it asks if you want to reboot. We want to double check if the package was deleted first, let’s execute this command again.

dism /online /get-packages

Step 8 – We are done! Close the Command Prompt and reboot your computer. After rebooting, you will see that the system language is changed. Keep in mind that the keyboard language might have changed as well, so if your account requires a password that contains symbols to login, then it’s possible that they are no longer where they used to be. You can change your account password for an easier one before changing the language to avoid this.

*As I told you at the beginning of the tutorial, here are some language package links.

  1. Bill B. says:

Is Win 10 really worth all the fuss ? Seems to me that it is more trouble than it is worth…I hope I don’t live long enough to see my Win 7 become obsolete….If I do I guess I’ll have to give up my computer and spend time doing real stuff.. like fishing.
