I would like to change my e-mail address to something a little easier for me to remember. I use Yahoo! as my main e-mail program. How can I do this?
That is a great question! I’m sure you’re not the only one who has been wondering this for some time now. You’ve probably been thinking about finding an answer to your question for awhile, but you just haven’t gotten around to it yet, am I right? Well, there’s no time like the present. If you want to change your e-mail address so it’s a little easier for you to remember, there is no shame in that. For that matter, there’s nothing wrong with changing your e-mail address for any reason.
If you think you need a new one or if you just want one, this tip is for you! Depending on what e-mail program you use, the process is rather pretty easy. I will go over how you can do this in several different e-mail programs, so don’t think you’re going to get left out. Here we go!
Yahoo!, Hotmail and any other free e-mail services: Basically, to change your e-mail address in any of the free e-mail clients, you just have to create a new account. You can set up a new e-mail address, username, password, etc. and just stop using your old one. Yes, this may be a little more than you were hoping to have to do, but you do have to remember that you’re using a free account and they can’t give you everything.
For Yahoo!, sign in to the account you have now and click on the My Account link at the top of the page. You’ll then probably be asked to enter your password again. Once you do that, a new screen will come up. Click on the Help link located in the upper right hand corner. From there, look for the question that says “How do I close my Yahoo! account“? You may have to click on the “How Do I” link to get there. That page will then give you all of the information and the link you need to close out your account. (Click on the Account Deletion link). There will be some information for you to read through, but if you’re completely sure you want to cancel it, enter your password again and click on the “Yes, terminate this account” button. Then, to create a whole new account, go back to Yahoo’s! main page and just click on the Sign Up link. You can then choose a whole new e-mail address, username, etc.
For Hotmail, sign in and click on the Help link in the right hand corner. A box with a bunch of questions will appear and you may have to type something like “Close my account” in the search box. That will then bring up a link to do so. It will give you all the information you need to cancel your account, etc. Then, to create a new account for yourself, go back to Hotmail’s homepage and click on the Sign Up button.
In Gmail, sign in to your present account and click on the Settings link. Next, click on the Accounts tab and then the Google Account Settings link. Choose the Edit link (the one next to the My Services section) and then click on Delete Gmail Service. That will then take care of everything for you. You can then go back to the main Gmail page and click on the Sign up for Gmail link to create a whole new account for yourself.
For Mozilla Thunderbird, open up your program and go to the Tools menu and choose Account Settings. At the very bottom on the left side of the box, click on the Remove Account button and just go from there.
Any other type of large ISP: This includes AOL, Earthlink, SBCglobal, BellSouth, etc. For any one you have to pay for, you mainly have to do the same thing as the free services above, but these come with a few more features. They usually have an e-mail forwarding service you can use until you’re about to notify everyone about your new e-mail address. It will also forward all of the e-mails that are sent to your old account straight to your new one, so you don’t ever have to worry about missing any e-mails. For these types of e-mail clients, it’s probably best to call them and have them help you change your information. That way, you will know for sure that it’s done correctly and that everything is set up the way you want it.
That is basically what you’ll want to do if you use any other ISP as well. For all of the paid services, it’s just better to call the company to make sure everything gets done correctly. Other than that, once you have everything set back up, you can enjoy your new, more “easy to remember” e-mail address. Now, you can’t beat that, can you?!
