Changing the Name on a Computer

Terry from Sarasota asks:

A friend gave me a laptop. Her name is in the PC info and I need to know how I can delete her name and put mine in.

Terry, thanks for the question. Changing the name on your laptop is relatively easy. Follow the directions below and you should be all set. However, Windows applies user names in several different places, so the original owner’s name may still show up occasionally. Also, if you’re connected to a network, changing the computer name may interfere with the pathways between your computer and others on the network. In that case, you may need to edit these connections in order to reestablish the links to the network.

Hold the Windows key and press the R key (Win+R). This will bring up the Run box. Type (or copy and paste) the following, sysdm.cpl

This will bring up the System Properties dialog box. Under the Computer Name tab, click the Change button. The images below are from a Windows 7 computer, but Vista is the same and, except for the tab layout, XP is very similar.

In the Computer name: field, add any name you’d like to assign to the computer and click OK. You may have to restart your computer, before the new name will actually be assigned.

Terry, now the computer is all yours. It even says so. Thanks again for the question.
