Clear It From the Run

Clear It From the Run

Is the computer in your home a sort of “common ground” for everyone in your family? Do you all use it at one point or another throughout the day? Including your children? Well, chances are, that’s how your home is set up and unfortunately, there may be times when you use certain programs that you don’t want your children to have access to. Take for example, the System Configuration Utility. Your children, who are not familiar with “msconfig,” might go there and make some changes. Without them knowing what they’re doing, they may affect the system performance of your computer or the changes may even crash your operating system.

So, when this type of thing comes around for you, you always have the option of clearing those particular programs from the Run list under the Start menu. You can either remove the complete program or even just a single file within it. Now, isn’t that helpful or what?! In Windows XP, you can do this by going into the Registry Editor and making some changes there.

For example, look at the following picture, where I have a few programs listed in the Run dialogue box from which I want msconfig to be deleted. Let’s see how I can get rid of them.

Note: Only advanced users are advised to work with the Registry Editor. If you are not an advanced user, but still want to perform this task, make sure you follow the directions provided below exactly the same. Do not try to change any other settings.

1.) Click on the Start menu and select Run.

2.) The Run dialogue box will open. Type “regedit” (without the quotes).

3.) Click OK to open the Registry Editor.

4.) Now, browse and open the RunMRUList from the following location:

5.) On the right panel, you will find the programs that you have before used when accessing the RUN command. They will be listed as a, b, c, etc.

6.) Go ahead and right click on the program you want to delete and click Delete. Here, in my example, I am going to delete b, which is where msconfig is listed.

7.) Click Yes in the next dialogue box to confirm. You will then need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

From the above picture, you can see msconfig has been removed from the RUN list. This way, you can delete the programs from the Run list one by one. On the other hand, you may want to delete the entire list. To do so, right click on the MRUList option, which is on the right panel and select Delete.

The entire list will then be deleted. So, the next time you restart your computer, you will not be able to find the programs under the Run list and your kids will have no way of getting into them. How convenient, right?!
