advice, guides, and even a message board.
Net
101
Are you a newbie? Not sure about all those little
acronyms and terms you see sprinkled around the net (like newbie)? Aren't
sure exactly what your doing if you're ROFL? Well, you too can become
a master of all these little net nuances. Check out this site and you'll
learn everything you need to know about online acronyms and smiley faces
:-)
Name
That File
Ever come across a file you can't open? You know
that you could open it if only you knew what the heck it was. Well, put
away that digital prybar and head to this site, they'll help ya out.
Egg
Hunt
If you would like to see some cool Easter Eggs (the
kind that live in computer programs) then check out this site. They have
nearly 2000 eggs for computer programs posted, plus some eggs for other
media as well.
Multimedia
(fun stuff)

Free
Desktop Wallpaper
Sorry, I have to put in a (shameless) plug here
for my free windows wallaper. I have over 100 outdoor images you can adorn
your Windows desktop with. Check it out :-)
More
Desktop Wallpaper
Check out SoftSeek's wallpaper section. They have
tons of wallpaper in nearly two dozen categories. Have fun!
Wave
Files
Here's a site that has tons of wave files archived
for your playing pleasure. The stuff on this site is mostly from movies,
but it will give you a good chance to try them out. Just head to a section
you like and click the link. It should automatically play.
More
Waves
Here's another good source for downloading WAV files.
These guys have thousands to choose from. Enjoy!
Font
Fun
Here's a site sent in by one of our readers. They
have an enormous collection of fonts in both Windows and MAC format. I'm
guessing if you can't find the "perfect" font here, it doesn't exist.
Active
Desktop Gallery
Want to add live news, sports, weather, and more
to your Active Desktop? Check out Microsoft's Active Desktop Gallery.
They have all sorts of cute little things you can add to your desktop.
Keep in mind that in order for these to be updated, you'll need to be
online.
Cursors
Everywhere!
If you would like to download and install some of
your own cursors, check out Dierk's List of Animated Cursors. Thousands
of different types of mouse cursors.
Internet
Bumper Stickers!
Yes, bumper stickers have found a home on the net,
and this site gives them away for free. You can stick 'em on your e-mails,
your web site, or even in documents. They are lots of fun to read through,
so enjoy :-)
Performance

Speed
Test
Want to know how good your Internet connection *really*
is? Check out the site below, they'll do a free "speed test" to let you
know how you're doing. My cable modem scored 618.2 Kbs, as opposed to
the max of 56 kbs of a regular dial-up modem. Too bad I'm not selling
cable modems...
Safety

Virus
Encyclopedia
If you value your digital information, you may be
interested in Symantec's online virus encyclopedia. This is probably the
most comprehensive source of virus info on the net. If you ever do get
infected, this should be your first stop for "disaffection". It's like
a doctor's office for sick computers.
Shields
Up!
Could your computer be hacked into? (As opposed
to "hacked in two", which is what you do with an ax when Windows
locks up for the 20th time in an hour.) These guys check to see how secure
you are on the Internet and if you are at any risk of getting "hacked"
while online. Fortunately, they also show you what to do if you are at
risk.
Zone
Labs Security
If you're worried about people hacking into your
computer, these guys have a program called Zone Alarm (free for personal
use, $19.95 for business use) that will help keep you safe. With it running,
your computer is about as secure as it can be. When I installed it on
my machine and tested it my computer appeared "invisible" to an outside
attacker.
Smart
Parents
Do your kids surf the web? If so, you probably want
to make sure they're safe. This site has software downloads that "filter"
out the questionable sites and lots of good online safety tips (maybe
us parents could even learn a thing or two).
Browser
Spy
What can a web site tell about you? Well, check
out this site and be surprised!
