Welcome to the NOAA Photo Library’s National Weather Service Photo Gallery. You can explore the navigation on the side menu if you want, but you just have to scroll down to get to the core content.
The photos are divided into topical galleries. To view the images click on the number next to the gallery you wish to view. Some only have one page of photos, others have more. The gallery will then load in thumbnails and you can click on the photo you wish to view to see a larger image. Some of the photos even have a higher resolution image available. Now from top to bottom the galleries are:
The Weather Wonders section shows fairly normal weather-related pictures, some of which were really beautiful. There are also pictures of “Sun Dogs, Sun Pillars, Rays & Bands” and “Space Weather”. Go to the site to see what I mean.
The Meteorological Monsters section includes all manner of storms, including “Dust” and “Surf’s Up” sections. The Tornado section is photos of the Great Cyclone at St. Louis, May 27th, 1896.
The next section is Exploring the Atmosphere, where you can browse “Kites and Balloons”, “Aircraft”, and “Radar & Other Electronic Methods”. There are some neat pictures here of the some of the technology behind our weather forecasting.
Measuring Instruments and Methods has a gallery of the same name that shows even more of the technology we use to foretell the weather.
Getting the Word Out has “Headquarters and Field Offices”, “Maps & Other Products”, and “Warning Systems.” This is more behind the scenes looks at what goes on at the National Weather Service.
Who was Who contains images of what I believe are the original members of the National Weather Service.
This is an excellent site from a historical point of view. The pictures on this site really speak for themselves. One of the cloud pictures even made it to my desktop!
