Create a Desktop Shortcut In Seconds!

Monday, July 21st, 2014 by | Filed Under: Quick Tips, Using The Internet

Jere from Mississippi asks:

I just switched to Windows 7 from XP. I want to create an icon on my desktop and just go straight to a website like I could before. I am worn out with all the new things. Help!

Hi Jere,

Creating a desktop icon to a website is simple, and this method works in IE, Chrome, and Firefox. Start by going to the website you’d like to make a shortcut to. Also make sure that the window is small enough that you can see part of your desktop.

There will be a little icon next to the address in your address bar. Each browser shows it differently.

Just click and drag that icon to your desktop and Voila! A shortcut is made.

Audra, Thanks for the tip. There are of course many other ways to do this but this is certainly easier than any of the others. I did note that when I created an icon from Firefox that the icon was still an IE icon and if IE was my default browser then it opened in IE. I suspect most folks won’t even notice this since they probably only ever use one browser.

I also noticed that when I did it with IE 9, all we are allowed to have at work, the process opened the web page again but with IE’s default settings and the icon always opens the web page with IEs default settings. What a pain for those of us that have customized IE’s toolbars etc. pretty heavily.

    Thanks again.

Meha, Glad you were able to get it to work. As stated n the above comment, it will save and open them in your default browser, no matter what browser you took it from.

Very easily done in Opera. Open the page and add it to Opera’s speed dial.
