Create Your Own Business Card In Just 5 Minutes

Even though the digital wave has taken over our life, a professional business card still remains a very useful tool! A well-designed business card is a helpful resource for any kind of business. It represents who you are and it should be designed with great care!

Whether you have any design skills or not, you should know that by following the easy steps presented in this tutorial, you will be able to create your own business card in just minutes! Your business card will be print-ready, modern and stylish! You’ll also get the download links for both business card designs, with fully editable PSD files.

I will guide you through the process of creating two types of business cards, one vertical and the other one horizontal. The designs are very simple. I will show you only some basic techniques for creating simple, minimalist business cards. Of course, only your creativity is the limit when in comes to graphic design! You can learn the basic steps in this tutorial and add your own creative touch to the design.

Before we begin, you should know that business cards can be horizontal (landscape) and have the following standard dimensions – 3.5 inches wide or long and 2 inches tall,  or vertical (portrait) – 3.5 inches tall and 2 inches wide. Landscape is the most common orientation for business cards, but I’ll show you how to create both of them.

Vertical Business Card Design

Start by opening up Adobe Photoshop and creating a new document, using the inputs below. Don’t forget to set your Color mode to CMYK, we’re designing for printers!  We’ll design the business cards with a bleed, so we’ll use a document size of 2.25 x 3.75 inches (.25 inch bleed allowance).

To make things easier, we’ll use guides to set up the working area. We chose a .25 inch bleed allowance. That means we’ll put guides on each side of the image at a .125″ distance. Click on View > New Guide > Vertical > ,125″. Repeat the step and input 2,125″. Repeat the step two more times to place the horizontal guides (input ,125 and 3,625). Now you have the guides in place.

I used a sample logo, a clean, white background, some icons I made and text. You can find the icons in the .PSD file provided below. I dragged and dropped all image files in Photoshop and positioned them. You can add your logo, customize the text as you want and even change the colors of the icons by right-clicking on the layer, select Blending Options > Color Overlay > Select Color and click Ok.

To make the design more balanced, especially in the contact details part at the bottom, I added some light beige stripes. Select Rectangle tool and make a horizontal rectangle with the width of an icon and the length of the business card, like in the image below.

Go to File > Save as PDF to save your file as a print ready file. Also make sure to tell the print shop the final size of your business card (2 x 3.5 inches in this case) and that your template includes a .25 inch bleed area.

That’s it! Here’s the final result, plus the download link for the fully-layered, fully-editable .PSD file.

Horizontal Business Card Design

Open Adobe Photoshop and create a new document, using the inputs below. We’ll use a document size of 3.75 x 2.25 inches (.25 inch bleed allowance). Add guides. Again, we’ll put guides on each side of the image at a .125″ distance. Click on View > New Guide > Vertical > ,125″. Repeat the step and input 3,625. Repeat the step two more times to place the horizontal guides (input ,125 and 2,125).

I’ll show you how I made my own business card. First of all, I dragged and dropped my logo and placed it in the center. You can use your own logo and contact details. I’m a designer and I like minimalist designs, that is the reason why my business card is black and white and very simple.

You can add custom shapes, colors and even the icons from the .PSD file above. If you want to learn how to use custom shapes, you should take a look at my previous tutorial: Easily Create An eBook Cover in Photoshop.

Horizontal Business Card

Go to File > Save as PDF. Don’t forget to tell the print shop the final size of your business card (3.2 x 2 inches in this case) and that your template includes a .25 inch bleed area.

You can get the .PSD file below.
