Create Your Own Keyboard Shortcuts in OpenOffice

Loading... A Shortcut Key for Every Occasion

If you’re a person who prefers keyboard shortcuts over using the mouse, today’s tip is a must read for you!

Have you ever caught yourself wishing for a key combination to accomplish a task while using any of the programs?

I know that I tend to use key combinations for certain tasks and, if they’re not available in a new program (such as when I switch between MS Office and it drives me crazy.

With that in mind, I went in search of what has to offer in the realm of customized key shortcuts… and I found a system that’s pretty easy to use, so let’s take a look at what’s at your disposal.

Begin with the Customize choice on the Tools menu.

In the Customize dialog box, we need to be on the Keyboard tab.

In the upper right hand corner, you will find a choice – choose where you want the shortcuts to be applied… all of or the specific program that you used to access the Customize settings.

Once you’ve selected the location for the shortcuts to be applied, the upper half of the dialog box contains a list of all key combinations and what action each one accomplishes.

As you can see above… there are lots of empty slots for whatever actions you want to add to the list.

In the bottom half of the dialog box, you’ll find the actions for which you can set shortcuts.

On the left, select the Category in which the feature should be located. In the middle column, select the actual function you want the shortcut to perform.

The right list is then populated with any shortcut keys that are already set.

If there are no shortcuts already set, you can select an unused one from the list at the top then click the Modify button.

If you find a shortcut listed you then have a choice:

* Keep it by doing nothing
* Add an additional shortcut by selecting something from the list and then click Modify
* Or, last but not least, you could delete it (Delete button) then select a new one from the list at the top then click Modify

Whatever decision you make, when you’re all set, click the OK button.

And that’s all there is to it! You can now customize a specific program or the whole office suite with just a few clicks now and save tons of clicks later.
