I know we’ve done some tips on this term before, but we’ve never really explained to you what it exactly is, so I thought I would do that for you today. First of all, IM stands for instant message and it is also known as IMing, like instant messaging. It basically is the most popular way to talk to your friends and family over the Internet.
You do have to have an IM client downloaded on your computer (most of them are free), but once you do that, you can talk to anyone who uses that same program. You just have to pick a screenname and then add buddies to your list. Once you do that, you can send messages back and forth with them. The nice thing about IMing is it’s all private, so you don’t have to worry about strangers finding you. Unless you choose to let other people see your screenname, only the people you give your name out to will be able to talk to you.
Instant messaging is faster than e-mail, because you’re right there with your friend instead of sending e-mails back and forth. It’s almost like you’re with them in person or on the phone with them. IMing is a useful tool for co-workers as well. Some of the more popular instant messaging programs are AIM (AOL), Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger. Go give it a try!
