Dirt Cheap Web Hosting: NearlyFreeSpeech.net

Are you interested in owning a little slice of the World Wide Web? Having a website is fun, but it can also be an expensive adventure. The most basic hosting plans from GoDaddy.com start at 10 GB of space, and cost over $60 a year! But why would you pay for all of that space, if you’re not going to use it?

If you’d like to host your website at a much more affordable rate, then I introduce to you NearlyFreeSpeech.net. This service is an interesting take on web hosting, which allows you to pay only for the space and bandwidth that you actually utilize. For personal users and small businesses, this pricing plan is ideal!

To begin, navigate to www.nearlyfreespeech.net [1] and select Sign Up Now.

Begin by selecting Create a membership, and fill in your name, desired username, and email address. Be sure to agree to the Terms and Conditions of Service.

You will then receive an email containing a link. By clicking this link, your account will be activated. This email will also contain your initial password, for your first time login.

After clicking the link in the email message, you will be directed to the Nearly Free Speech (NFS) site and informed that your membership has been confirmed. Select Click here to continue. Be patient! We’re almost ready to begin creating our website.

Now you can login using your chosen login name, and the password contained in the email.

Next, you’ll need to enter in your personal information including your address.

Ah, finally! You will see that your account has been created, and that your account currently contains two cents. As the message states, you’d be surprised at how far two cents lasts with NFS!

To begin creating your site, click the sites tab, and Create A New Site from the Actions menu.

Enter in the short name of your site. NFS provides a good description of how to choose a name for your site. Keep in mind that your site will get a free domain of http://(shortname).nfshost.com/, so choose wisely.

Next you will be asked if you have a current domain like www.example.com.If you’re a new web hoster, this probably doesn’t apply to you, so select No and Continue. If you are interested in obtaining a domain name, then, don’t worry, I’ll address that at the end of this tip.

Finalize the process by select Create Now.

Now you’ll be directed to the information page of your brand new website! You should see the FTP username and password information provided. If you know how to use File Transfer Protocol to host files on the web, then awesome! If not, then we have a great starter’s guide right here [2].

Okay, you should be all good to go.  As I mentioned earlier, if you’d like to purchase a .com or .net domain for your website, you can do that by clicking the domains tab, and selecting Register a New Domain, and just following the wizard. A domain will cost you about 9 dollars a year, and is a great investment because it allows web surfers to easily find your website.

Finally, if you are wondering how much NFS can save you, check out their pricing calculator [3]. I am proud to say that NFS hosts my personal site for an affordable eleven bucks a year!

Enjoy, and if you have questions, feel free to leave them in comments section.
