Disaster in Japan

As a rule, our In the News segment focuses on news of technological breakthroughs, or other news related to our digital world. Today, in acknowledgment of what we consider to be one of the most significant events in recent memory, we’ve included the following story.
Disaster in Japan
The offshore earthquake and resulting tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, has caused untold devastation, killing thousands, with thousands more still missing, and hundreds of thousands left homeless. At the time of this writing, as if the problems directly caused by this disaster weren’t enough, radiation leaks and a possible meltdown at the Fukushimia Daiishi nuclear power plant are adding to the disastrous complexities of the ongoing situation. In addition to the obvious health risks associated with increased radiation levels, the malfunctioning nuclear reactors are contributing to an energy shortage throughout the area, leading to rolling blackouts.
Food and water shortages are reported in the the northeast, where the most widespread devastation occurred. Ensuing significant aftershocks, with more predicted, are aggravating what are already extremely difficult circumstances. Also, due to the tremendous damage on the ground, many areas of the country are only accessible by air, further hampering humanitarian aid.
While there is no lack of shocking images of this disaster, as I was writing this, I found this New York Times site , offering before and after satellite photos of affected areas.
