Do I Have To Upgrade?

About a year ago I purchased a Dell all in one desktop from
Home Shopping Network. As a promotion I was given Trend Antivirus and Premium Tech support for a period of four years. After a few months Microsoft starting pushing Windows 8.1. I declined the program. About a week ago they did install 8.1, I contacted Premium Tech Support and ask them to delete the upgrade….I was told I was using a Microsoft program and had to accept the upgrade to Windows 8.1. To your knowledge is this true? Now they want to install One Drive and Cloud I have just read in today’s edition from Brenda that I need not take those programs. I would appreciate your input, thank you in advance.

Lois, I’m curious as to why you would want to downgrade. There’s not a whole lot of difference between Windows 8 and 8.1, but 8.1 and 8.1.1 (which you will update to if you apply all the recent updates) have some great features. The only way to downgrade would be to reinstall Windows 8 and wipe out everything on your computer.


The same is true with OneDrive, you can remove it from Windows 7, but it is integrated into Windows 8.1.  Tt’s a great option to have on your computer and it’s not like you have to use it if you don’t want to. Sounds like the techs with your premium tech support are just trying to do what they are being paid for and keep your computer up-to-date with the latest operating system and features.

It also makes their jobs easier if customers are using the latest version of Windows with all updates, because then they know that suggest fixes for issues will work. It may be possible that the particular programs they use to do that premium tech support do require you to have that 8.1 upgrade. 


Just because you have the free tech support package doesn’t mean that you are required to use it. If you aren’t interested in having the latest updates, you could always discontinue the service, because it’s likely these techs will continue to do what they’re being paid for and encourage you add the latest updates.

Unless you are encountering some sort of problem with 8.1, I suggest you check out the new features of 8.1.1, you might like them. But it sounds to me like you might not trust the judgment of the people providing the tech support and if you don’t, there’s certainly no reason you have to use them.
