Do You Need A $400 Remote?

Thursday, March 9th, 2017 by | Filed Under: Hardware & Peripherals, TV Tech

As we add more tech items to our home entertainment systems, keeping track of the remotes can be tricky. There’s the TV, streaming box, Xbox, cable box, DVD player, stereo and more. And it seems like each remote is more complicated than the next. There’s a new device that promises to solve that problem — for a price. It’s called Caavo and the slogan for this hot new pieces of tech is “All your home entertainment, unified.”

It certainly is a good-looking device with a sleek metal and wood finish.

The developers say it will connect your cable or satellite box, streaming devices, and game consoles into on single box. Your apps, live TV, and your DVR will all be accessible through one simple interface.

You’ll control your TV with what they promise is a simple voice-enabled remote. Your old remotes and game controllers will still work as well. Caavo sounds great, but that doesn’t mean it’s the ideal tool for playing Minecraft on your Xbox.

Caavo is basically a simple box that you plug your devices into. But there’s also software that gives you a simple user interface displayed on the television screen and controlled with a remote.

The device features auto detect, so it should immediately recognize whatever device you plug into it. Voice control means that you can just speak into the remote and turn on the TV to begin searching for programs. The universal search will look across all your platforms from cable to Netflix to iTunes to find what you’re looking for.

As I said, all of this comes at a price — around $400.  And, I don’t know about you, but I seem to recall that every universal remote system that ever was billed itself as simple and intuitive.

The device will be available for pre-order starting in May. Click here to learn more about Caavo.

What do you think?  If it works as well as they claim, would it be worth the price? Let us know in the comments.

Hey Cynthia, Congeniality is not necessarily what I would look for in a remote, however I guess a ‘WIKILEAKS’ seal of approval or CIA/NSA hack proof recommendation would be nice…relative to some news reports, lately.
