If there’s one valuable tip I can offer people about their software purchases it’s that you have to hold on to that product key! We’ve talked about product keys before.
They come printed on disc packages or on cards and are sometimes e-mailed to you for digital downloads.
The one thing I can’t emphasize enough is how important it is to hang on to them, even after you’ve registered your product. What you are really paying for with any serialized software purchase is the product key. Those numbers are really your only proof of purchase and no one else keeps them on file for you. Should you need to re-install your program due to a hard drive failure or just because you’re switching computers, you won’t be able to do it without your product key. If you’re talking about a program like Microsoft Office, you could lose hundreds of dollars just by losing a few numbers.
Put them in a safe, store them in a file for quick reference on your computer…even put them in safe deposit box if you have a lot of expensive programs. But don’t lose them!
