Don’t Lose Your Product Key

If there’s one valuable tip I can offer people about their software purchases it’s that you have to hold on to that product key! We’ve talked about product keys before.

They come printed on disc packages or on cards and are sometimes e-mailed to you for digital downloads.

The one thing I can’t emphasize enough is how important it is to hang on to them, even after you’ve registered your product. What you are really paying for with any serialized software purchase is the product key. Those numbers are really your only proof of purchase and no one else keeps them on file for you. Should you need to re-install your program due to a hard drive failure or just because you’re switching computers, you won’t be able to do it without your product key.  If you’re talking about a program like Microsoft Office, you could lose hundreds of dollars just by losing a few numbers.

Put them in a safe, store them in a file for quick reference on your computer…even put them in safe deposit box if you have a lot of expensive programs. But don’t lose them!

I take a photo of the code with my cell phone, then make sure it saves the photo to my Dropbox account as well. That way I can access them wherever I am and not have to go looking through my file at home.

Isn’t there a way you can look up the serial number used on the PC that you are running that software?

You would think that and their very well may be but it’s not something that is advertised if it is and it is also possible that it might be encrypted even if you could find it. I know “magic jellybean” used to be able to display product keys but I haven’t seen it work on windows 7 and newer systems. BUT if you still have access to your computer you can run BELARC which will give you a lot of useful information regarding your computer and also give you the product keys of any software you installed…(If it was installed when you bought the computer it may not be the correct key. I think manufactures use a “manufacture’s key” which is different than a “consumer product key”)
